This is the most thorough form of genetic screening available today. All chromosomes of each embryo are tested, not just five or nine as with older PGT-A methods. This means you get a clear picture of which embryos are chromosomally healthy and which carry the right chromosomes for the sex you are hoping for. NGS increases success rates by around 15% compared to standard IVF without genetic testing, and it significantly reduces the risk of miscarriage.

This is the part most guides skip entirely. Finding a doctor at home who will support your IVF treatment abroad is not always straightforward, and when gender selection is involved, you need to be careful about what you say.

Despite that, many doctors are happy to support patients who choose to pursue these treatments abroad. Some actively encourage it. The situation with gender selection is different. Pharmacies in border towns like St. Louis near Basel are used to Swiss customers and often have German-speaking staff. The trip takes an hour and the savings are worth it. Some clinics also offer individual solutions for medication sourcing, so it is always worth asking your coordinator directly what they can arrange.
For patients in Germany, ordering online from pharmacies in the Netherlands, Belgium or France is generally straightforward. Delivery is usually fast and the process is well established.
If you are doing your full preparation in North Cyprus, medication costs there are around 50% lower than in Switzerland. In that case, you skip the search entirely and buy everything on the spot, often with the clinic’s guidance.
How the clinic sends your prescription and protocol
Once you have chosen a clinic in North Cyprus and submitted your initial blood results, sperm analysis and full medical history, they will send you a detailed protocol. This is a day-by-day plan that tells you exactly when to start medication and when to go for monitoring appointments.
The clinic coordinator is your main contact throughout this process. A good clinic will be reachable around the clock, respond quickly via WhatsApp and communicate in your language. They send your prescription directly and are with you from the very first contact all the way through to after you return home.

There is no single way to plan a gender selection trip to North Cyprus. Over the years I have seen families approach this very differently depending on their situation, how much time they have, and how discreet they want to be. Here are the three most common scenarios.
Option 1: The family holiday in North Cyprus
This is the most popular option for couples who already have children and want to combine treatment with a genuine family holiday. North Cyprus is a beautiful Mediterranean destination with beaches, good food and family-friendly hotels. Spring to autumn are the best times to go. Summer can be very hot and is not ideal when you are going through stimulation.
The advantage of this option is that the whole family travels together and nobody at home needs to know the real reason for the trip. You start stimulation directly in North Cyprus, which means you do not need a doctor at home at all. Medication in North Cyprus is around 50% cheaper than in Switzerland, and consultations and monitoring are usually included in the clinic price, which would not be the case if you started preparation at home.
The timeline looks roughly like this. You arrive at the start of your cycle, begin stimulation on day three, attend monitoring appointments as your follicles develop, and the egg retrieval takes place around day fourteen. Your partner provides a sperm sample on the same day. After retrieval the embryos are cultured and biopsied, then frozen immediately for NGS testing. You fly home and return alone a few weeks later for the embryo transfer, once the results are ready and your cycle is in the right phase.
Option 2: The woman travels alone, the man separately
This option works well for families who cannot take two to three weeks off together or whose schedules simply do not allow for a joint trip. The preparation happens at home with the support of a local doctor. Stimulation starts at home, monitoring is done locally, and the woman travels to North Cyprus alone for the egg retrieval, usually a few days before the procedure.
The partner does not need to be there at the same time. He can travel separately beforehand to provide a sperm sample, which is then frozen and ready for fertilisation when the eggs are retrieved. This is a practical and flexible arrangement that many couples prefer.
The woman returns home after egg retrieval and travels back alone at a later point for the embryo transfer. The whole process involves at least two trips, but they are short and can easily be explained as personal travel.
Option 3: Embryos created at home and shipped abroad
This is the least common option but it exists and it works in certain situations. Whether it is possible depends entirely on the country you live in and the clinic involved. In Germany, for example, this is unlikely to be an option. It is something that needs to be explored case by case, with both your local clinic and the clinic in North Cyprus.
One of my clients had her embryos created and frozen at the university clinic in Zurich and then shipped to North Cyprus using a specialist courier. The process and selection program is logistically more complex and the transport costs several thousand euros, not hundreds.
The advantage is that you can have the entire medical process done at home under familiar conditions, and then travel only once for the embryo transfer, which requires just one day abroad. For some families, that level of control and familiarity is worth the additional cost and coordination.
What Happens at the IVF Clinic in North Cyprus
From arrival to egg retrieval: the timeline
When you arrive in North Cyprus, the clinic coordinator will already know exactly where you are in your cycle. Everything has been planned in advance. Your partner provides a sperm sample on the day of retrieval, or the frozen sample prepared in advance is used. The eggs are fertilised in the laboratory and monitored over the following days as they develop into embryos.
With NGS testing, the embryos are biopsied on day five in the blastocyst stage and immediately frozen. All chromosomes are analysed, including the sex chromosomes, which determines both chromosomal health and gender. Results take two to three weeks. You fly home and wait.
Why the frozen embryo transfer happens later and why that is better
Many people ask why the transfer does not happen during the same trip. The answer is straightforward. After ovarian stimulation, the body needs time to recover from the hormonal impact before an embryo can implant successfully. Transferring immediately after stimulation reduces the chances of success. A natural cycle transfer in a later month gives the uterus the best possible conditions.
This is also why I always recommend NGS over a fresh transfer with PGT-A. Yes, it means a second trip. But the embryo that is transferred has been fully screened, the body is rested, and the timing is optimal. In my experience, that combination makes a real difference to the outcome.
For the transfer itself, you only need one day in North Cyprus. Many women travel alone, have the transfer in the morning, and fly home the same evening or the following day. Success Rates: What the Numbers Actually Mean
Success rates are one of the most misunderstood topics in IVF. Every clinic publishes them, but very few explain what they actually measure. Before you compare numbers, you need to understand what you are looking at.
Most clinics report the pregnancy rate based on a positive blood test 11 days after the embryo transfer. That is the most optimistic number and the one that looks best on a website. Age is the single most important factor in IVF success. The older you are, the fewer chromosomally healthy embryos you are likely to produce, and the higher the risk of miscarriage. This is not a reason to give up, but it is something you need to understand before you start.
Most women planning gender selection already have children, which means they are often over 35. At that age, getting pregnant naturally is already less straightforward than it was at 28. Add the 50% statistical chance of producing embryos of the desired gender, and the picture becomes more complex.
The miscarriage rate at under 35 is around 10 to 15%. From 40 onwards it rises sharply, reaching over 70% by the mid-forties. This is pure biology and it matters enormously when you are planning how many cycles to budget for.
The 0% scenario: when all healthy embryos are not the desired gender
This is the scenario nobody warns you about and it happens more often than people expect. Imagine you produce ten eggs in one cycle. After fertilisation, five embryos reach the blastocyst stage on day five. After NGS testing, three are chromosomally healthy. But all three are the gender you did not want. Your success rate for that cycle is 0% and you need to start again.
The probability of this happening is not small. Every embryo has a 50% chance of being the desired gender, regardless of how many children you already have or what gender they are. There is no way to influence this. It is statistics.
This is why I always tell clients to plan for at least two cycles, both emotionally and financially. It is not pessimism. It is realistic planning that protects you from being blindsided. If the first cycle works and you get the gender you wanted, that is wonderful. But going in with a plan for two cycles means you are prepared either way.

On social media, you can post exactly what you would post on any other holiday. Beaches, food, sunsets. Nothing about the clinic, nothing about the treatment. If you normally share travel content, the absence of posts would be more noticeable than posting as usual.
For the later transfer trip, which is usually just one or two days, a short city break or a long weekend away is a completely believable cover. Nobody needs to know you spent two hours at a clinic.
